IN HIS cell, as miserable as he was, just remembering it made his anger smolder and rise. He’d learned a long time ago that quiet fights usually meant someone died. When he’d fought off Kris’s attackers, he hadn’t been too worried about noise, knowing Kris was going to call the cops as soon as he got to a phone.

When Tate rounded the truck, a solitary man lay on the ground, his assailant standing over him, boot poised to kick. He wasn’t as big as the guy who’d pulled a knife on Tate at Area 52, and didn’t appear to have a weapon, although in the grips of his anger, seeing a weapon likely wouldn’t have stopped Tate. Without another thought, Tate waded right in, making as much noise as he could, trying to create a disturbance worthy of calling the police.

For good or bad, the fight had come to the attention of the authorities. The police who arrested Tate hadn’t cared about explanations, and the guy on the ground had been too injured to offer a statement before he was whisked away to the hospital by EMTs who weren’t Jaime.

Wherever the other guy had been taken—maybe he’d called someone to bail him out—at least he hadn’t been put in the same cell as Tate.

More than one police officer had asked Tate if he had someone he wanted to call. But he didn’t. Or at least, the one man he wanted to call wouldn’t want either his family time or sleep—depending on how late it was—interrupted by a giant fuckup by the guy he was dating, demonstrating just how fucked-up and stupid he was.

Every cop who asked, though, thought Tate was just being difficult, and the last one seemed to think a night in the cells would be just the thing to teach him a lesson about cooperating with the authorities.

If this went before a judge, Tate would be going to prison, of that he was certain. He’d had too many near scrapes for a judge to do anything else. Tate better start getting used to the smells and the confinement now, as well as the loss of the best thing to happen to him. No matter what Jaime had said about no judgment and accepting him as he was, there was no way Jaime would wait for him. Last time Tate had hung out with Kris at Area 52, Kris had referred to Jaime as Tate’s boyfriend, but he’d never heard Jaime call himself that. No surprise, really, and it was even less likely to happen now. Who’d want an ex-con boyfriend who was too stupid to avoid getting arrested all the time?

Tate was going to miss their date tomorrow, and maybe Jaime would be mad that he’d been stood up. Maybe he’d even go and ask Kris about Tate. But Kris wouldn’t know anything either. At that point, maybe Jaime would start looking for him. Once he got around to calling the police and found out Tate was in jail? He’d probably give up on Tate right then.
